How often are pap smears needed?
Pap smears are needed on a regular basis, but the frequency varies by patient age. Pap smears should start by the age of 21 and should be performed at least every three years for women ages 21-65.
For women who have health issues, especially issues impacting the female reproductive system, more frequent pap smears may be recommended. Dr. Pabis can perform a Pap smear as part of your well-woman check-up if needed.
What are some of the most common gynecologic issues for women today?
There are several gynecology issues that are quite common today. Fibroids are reproductive system tumors that are made up of muscle cells and tissue. They can be tiny or huge, and they are found in most women at some point. Fibroids may not cause any problems, but in some cases, they cause pain. They can be treated with medication or surgery.
Endometriosis is another common condition for women in their reproductive years. In this condition, the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus and causes problems like pain, heavy bleeding, and even infertility. Endometriosis can be treated with medication, hormones, or minimally invasive surgical procedures.
PMS is another common problem for women today, one which causes both physical and emotional struggles just prior to menstruation. There are lifestyle changes and medications that can help patients deal with PMS effectively.
